Trade Kings Group is a wholly Zambian owned business, specialising in the creation and manufacture of innovative laundry and cleaning products, delicious sweets, confectionary, snacks, biscuits and reinventing both traditional and exciting new beverages.

For 25 years, Trade Kings Group has been creating innovative laundry and cleaning products, delicious sweets, confectionary, snacks, biscuits and reinventing both traditional and exciting new beverages. With Mr. Patel, our founder and group CEO, at the helm his values, vision and resolve have had a profound influence on the business and remains a source of inspiration for the Trade Kings Group, we know and love today.

An intergenerational family business ethos, values and culture still govern the way we do business. Trade Kings is a family business with our current directors being the second generation to drive the business forward. Although still actively involved in the business, Mr. Patel challenges the next generation and his team to continue pursuing excellence and take the business to greater heights. Speaking both of the Trade Kings Group as well as the young entrepreneurs and visionaries, Mr. Patel says “The perpetual quest to remain at dizzying heights of the industry is a journey not a destination. It should be a relentless pursuit for the pioneers of the future.”

Whilst we are always looking to the future. It is our heritage and the heritage of the country in which we operate that makes us who we are. We often reflect on our history and take inspiration from our origins. Our history and roots remain deeply intertwined with Zambia, the community, its people and the sub Saharan African region at large. We are proud to represent Zambia on the global stage and are thankful to be recognized amongst the top brands in Africa.

We still make the tried, tested and trusted brands and products for which we have become a household name but have modernised and embraced change over the years. Today, we are still the same business and the makers of innovative, beautiful, functional, high quality products designed to simplify your life but now are driven by innovation, invention, global standards, international manufacturing practices, research and rapid product development in order to continue pushing limits and bringing you the very best.

Although we have grown to be amongst the largest FMCG manufacturers in sub Saharan Africa, to include seven subsidiary businesses, now operating in ten countries and with a product range spanning everything from laundry and cleaning products, beverages and foods to steel production. The vision, tenacity, entrepreneurial spirit and creativity which drove the early success of Trade Kings can still be seen in the passion of its talented, hardworking teams and experts.

At Trade Kings, we are uncompromising when it comes to product quality we can put our name on, “Improving Lives” of the Zambian and African people that have welcomed Trade Kings into their homes and never taking for granted what our products mean to you, your families and homes.

We are excited for you to join the Trade Kings story.

Follow the journey which took a business from humble beginnings, with a single product and a man with a single minded vision, to one of Sub Saharan Africa’s largest FMCG manufacturing groups.

Our story is that of one man “boldly reimagining the impossible”. The Trade Kings Group story began in 1995 from a garage in the Zambian capital, Lusaka. Not blessed with cutting edge technology or state of the art facilities, Trade Kings founder, Mr. Patel, a Zambian business man with unwavering ambition, relied on his drive, determination, ingenuity and intimate knowledge of the needs of the community around him to achieve what many thought impossible. From a single brand, single product business Trade Kings Group has expanded into ten neighbouring countries, seven subsidiary businesses and manufactures a diverse portfolio of high quality products ranging from laundry detergents and cleaning products to food, beverages and even steel.

Mr. Patel spent his childhood in the village of Mugubudu, Chipata, Eastern Province, later moving to Lusaka. As an adolescent, resourceful and adventurous, the desire to be enterprising came to him naturally. Over weekends, he sourced household provisions from local stores in Lusaka, which he would sell while driving down to Chipata. Years later, armed with meagre capital, he boldly acquired a readymade textile trading outfit, followed by a bakery, which was fitted with equipment manufactured locally. During this time wheat flour was in short supply. To ease the strain on the grain, prompted him to initiate, a then virgin concept at that time, of an “out grower’s scheme” with local wheat farmers. The success of the hot bakery ovens led to trading of fast moving consumer goods across Lusaka and later greater Zambia. Mr. Patel’s connection to Zambia and its people, patriotism, passion for supporting local business and shared value was evident even then. This still remains central to the business through our business partnerships and the Trade Kings Foundation.

In 1995, whilst the world saw a technological genesis in the conceptualisation and birth of global tech companies from the garages of Silicon Valley, USA. Across the sea an African genesis was taking place, as the seed of Trade Kings was being planted in a garage in Lusaka, Zambia where our founder, Mr. Patel, conceived of and tirelessly worked to develop, the now iconic, Blue Boom Detergent Paste and the BOOM brand. And so, from these humble beginnings the Trade Kings story began.

As this era of rapid development, disruption and invention has seen these tech companies become global giants, so to have we seen Trade Kings grow into a jewel of Zambia and the African continent. In contrast to these global giants whose success was based on a deep understanding of global trends and users on a global scale, Trade Kings was founded on the principles of localised insight and connection. A deep understanding of Zambia, its people and their challenges in a country facing difficult economic times following a period of economic and political unrest and uncertainty in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.

It is from the volatility, instability and challenging environment of the domestic and African economy that our flagship brand, BOOM, was born. Our founder understood that the Zambian people required a high quality, locally produced but affordable washing and cleaning solution. He understood need for and multipurpose use of the product. It is this development and the acute attention to detail in addressing these points which continues to make the product successful today.

In the word of Mr. Patel “One should learn to orchestrate harmoniously in chaos despite the odds being faced.”

In the context of tailwinds from economic reform and the opening of the Zambian market, Trade Kings was well positioned for growth. As we grew so too did our ambitions. 1997 and 1998 saw the introduction of new personal care products with the launch of Yebo Carbolic soaps and the Romeo soap brand respectively. During this time the group also began to diversify for the first time with the launch of Super Sweets in 1998. In 2005, following the success of Super Sweets saw further diversification as the group expanded into foods.

In 2006, we launched the highly successful Amazon brand which would go on to be the flagship brand of our confectionary division. Although expansion during this period began with confectionery, the cross pollination of ideas led to the manufacture of lollipops, biscuits, adult and children’s breakfast cereals, potato and maize snacks and soya nuggets. Giving rise to four of our specialist subsidiary businesses. Namely, Yoyo Fun Snacks, Swiss Bake, Big Tree Brands (Royal Oak) and Nyama Soya.

In 2008, an epoch-making event, was the commissioning of Kafue Steel Mills under the banner of Universal Mining and Chemical Industries Limited (UMCIL), which prided itself on state of the art cutting edge technology. In 2017, this plant became fully integrated. The first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, which now converts raw iron ore to finished steel products through a sophisticated value addition chain.

In 2010, following intensive research and development, new technologies and cutting edge ingredients BOOM Bubble Plus Detergent Powder was launched. Trade Kings Group established itself, as an epitome of quality products. This sparked an intense focus on research and innovation leading to the launch of the Boom Household Range of Home Care products in 2012 and continues to drive a wave of product development, bringing you the quality products you know and love.

Although initially established in 2003, as the first company to release commercially bottled Maheu. The Trade Kings subsidiary, Dairy Gold, as we know it today, was incorporated in 2015, and continues to manufacture a range of nutritious and high quality products from traditional beverages like Maheu to milk shakes and juices. In 2016, the group expanded further entering the beverage category through the establishment of Big Tree Beverages to build a beverage portfolio which spans carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices to energy drinks.

The evolution of Trade Kings is, and has always been, driven by consumer needs and solution based product development from detergent paste to the advanced household cleaners and increasingly specialised personal care products, for which we are known today. At the heart of Trade Kings is a driving belief that all people have the right to access and use high quality products that are affordable. For many years, Trade Kings products provided the Zambian and southern African market access to high quality products at affordable prices providing a product experience often absent in low cost or affordable imported products.

The principle of accessibility and a belief in providing joy and self-confidence to our consumers still drives the business today.

It is this spirit of innovation and the vision to see opportunity during challenging and unstable times that remain the core of Trade Kings. This sense of deep understanding of domestic and regional challenges which drive our product portfolio and ongoing expansion.

Over the past 25 years Trade Kings has seen incredible growth, and though Trade Kings is now a large multinational the essence still remains that of the company founded in Mr Patel’s garage. The same values and ethos that brought them into the homes of Zambians across the country and Africans across the region shall drive Trade Kings onwards. Though the scope has increased, the goal remains the same - products of the highest standards yet within the reach of all consumers, in every home and the desire to be the leaders in local and international manufacturing. From a small family business, to a flagbearer for Zambia and beyond.

Trade Kings Group remains committed to “Improving Lives”. From education, health and infrastructure to development value addition programs, employment creation and women’s / youth empowerment. Find out what we’re doing to build a better future.

At Trade Kings, we create enduring, iconic, and innovative products that enable people to enjoy their lives. Whether sharing memorable moments, bringing joy or simplifying lives. We combine our approach to product development and creation with our commitment to our consumers and the communities in which we operate. We want you to be as proud to use our products as we are to make them.

Since Trade Kings was founded, the business has been built around this singular purpose which remains the corner stone across the group and its subsidiary businesses. We remain committed to “Improving Lives” both within Zambia and across Africa at large.

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” Joel A. Barker

We believe in creating lasting impact and we take a systemic approach to “Improving Lives”, a holistic view and belief in creating long term impact in order to improve the lives of as many people as possible. We understand that all our initiatives and areas of focus are interrelated. We see the big picture but aim to address root causes to build up a self-sustaining ecosystem of change which will deliver support both now and into the future.

We consider this the interrelation or connection of five key focus areas of our business, working together to achieve the singular goal of “Improving Lives”.

  1. Trade Kings Products: The consistent provision of high quality, locally produced, affordable products which are accessible and that consumers can trust.
  2. Strong Foundation of Corporate Citizenship: Maintain ethical behaviour which creates balance between Trade Kings and the needs of the community whilst meeting our responsibilities toward society, enabling high standards of living and quality of life for our communities.
  3. Value addition, Grower Programs and Local Supplier Partnerships: The ongoing efforts to support local industrialisation, industry development and drive raw material security through public private partnership and, where possible, localised sourcing.
  4. Trade Kings Foundation: The provision of support to those in need and bringing hope to many affected by the foundations areas of focus.
  5. Womens Empowerment and Youth Development: Direct job creation through Trade Kings Womens Network, training and support of women groups and entrepreneurial women across Zambia.

We focus on improving the lives of our consumers through unmatched quality, improved levels of service, improved accessibility to our products, simplification of consumer pain points and creation of value through our pricing. As a business we believe that trust is earned not expected from our consumers, built over time through reliability and product consistency.

In order to support local industry and producers, the Trade Kings Group places a great deal of focus on value addition and corporate shared value programs including the Zambian dairy industry, maize value addition, domestic milling and potato out grower programs. Where possible we aim to support local industry in the sourcing and processing of raw materials. We work closely with related bodies, producers and growers to drive this development and establish necessary criteria to meet our stringent quality standards.

The Trade Kings Foundation participates in numerous philanthropic activities annually. Whether providing water to rural communities, redeveloping mother’s shelters to improve neonatal care and reduce infection rates, equipping and developing infrastructure to support those affected by clubbed feet, providing medical equipment, investment and health care infrastructure development, providing relief or hygiene education, developing products to ensure potable drinking water, charitable donations, school sponsorship programmes, feeding programmes, community outreach programmes or driving entrepreneurial support for women, it is done to improve the lives of our communities and our consumers.

The Trade Kings Foundation, enables positive systemic change as outlined by its ten guiding pillars and governed by the vision of building a better future and improving the lives of those in need. It is the driving force and social wing of our business dedicated to realising this purpose.

Primary areas of focus for Trade Kings and The Trade Kings Foundation include:

  • Poverty Alleviation - Job creation, rural community and entrepreneurial support.
  • Health - Infrastructure and disaster relief.
  • Disaster Relief and Education - Hygiene education, prevention awareness, product support and relief.
  • Quality Education – Skills development, access and transferable skills training
  • Water and Sanitation – Borehole digging and maintenance. Potable water security and taking to market of a low cost purification solution.
  • Disability Support - Prosthetics provision, related infrastructure development and funding.
  • Community Development and Sustainability – Rural community upliftment, entrepreneurial support and incubators.
  • Hunger Alleviation / Nutrition – School Feeding Programs and public private partnerships.
  • Infant Mortality and Maternal Health - Mothers shelter restoration, infrastructure development and maintenance as well as education and training.
  • Gender Equality and Womens Empowerment – Womens network and entrepreneurial support.

Trade Kings promotes Womens Empowerment through the Trade Kings Womens Network as well as youth and entrepreneurial support. Within the Trade Kings Group, we are committed to building an inclusive culture and are proudly driving Womens empowerment both internally and externally. We aim to maintain female representation at all levels of our business, whilst constantly providing training and exploring new approaches to provide opportunities through innovative employment models. Additionally, the Trade Kings Group through Big Tree Brands supports local women’s groups of informal baked good vendors, providing baking products, food safety and business skills training. We believe that by empowering women this directly enables families and communities to grow and develop.

This combination of the production quality, product reliability, corporate shared value initiatives, corporate social responsibility initiatives, public private partnership, active corporate citizenship and deep support of women and youth empowerment work together to enable system wide change, increasing the impact of investment and improve the lives of those affected. The complexity of these issues cannot be understated and we in no way intend to over simplify them. As such, the Trade Kings Foundation has had to explore new solutions and has adopted a big picture, long term approach. Trade Kings believes in doing our part to improve conditions, treatments, perceptions and causes at the most fundamental or root level with a long term outlook. We believe that this long term outlook will allow us to broaden the scope of our areas of support gradually.

Of all the partners we have, the one responsible for the greatest impact is…YOU. Without your support, our consumers and customers, over the past 25 years and welcoming the Trade Kings Group into your homes none of this would be possible. You make our vision a reality and together we will build a better future. Our vision is to continue being an inspiration for all around us. By improving lives today, we are building a better tomorrow.

“How do we change the world? One act of random kindness at a time.” Morgan Freeman

The rest, as they say…is history.
